On 8 January 2004, we were honoured to receive a licence from the PRC Government to open a Representative Office in Chongqing. Chongqing is one of only four cities to be granted municipality status in China. The city is centrally administered from Beijing and is the largest economic centre in Southwest China. Chongqing is one of the focal points for the development of central and western China. There are grand plans and aspirations for this city of over 30 million individuals and also for the surrounding hinterland.
With the support of the Chongqing Bureau of Justice and the Law Society of Hong Kong, we are the first Hong Kong law firm granted permission by the Ministry of Justice to open a Representative Office in Chongqing.
Our Representative Office was open on 27 May 2004. The opening ceremony was held at the Hotel Harbour Plaza Chongqing. We were honoured by the presence of Mr Stephen Wong Kai Yi (Deputy Solicitor General of the Department of Justice), Mr Anthony Chow Wing Kin and Mr Ip Shing Hing (both former Presidents of the Law Society of Hong Kong). This was timed to coincide with the "Chongqing – Hong Kong week".
